CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Four people died in a three-car crash late Wednesday afternoon in Clarksville.
Ashland City Road was shut down between Cumberland Drive and Edmondson Ferry Road as authorities investigated.
Clarksville Police said a Dodge Dakota pickup truck was driving west on Ashland City Road as traffic was heavy and backed up during rush hour.
The driver, a man, reportedly didn’t have time to react and swerved across the double lines to avoid a rear-end collision.
‘He didn’t have time to react,” said Sgt. Johnny Randstall with Clarksville Police. “He didn’t have time to slow down; he didn’t have time to stop to avoid another collision.”
The pickup truck hit a Dodge SUV head-on. That SUV then hit a third vehicle.
Four people died, including three people inside the Dodge SUV and the driver of the truck.
“The truck flipped and caught on fire, resulting in his death,” said Sgt. Randstall.
None of their identities have been released at this time.
Officials with Clarksville Police said they believe if the driver of the Dakota hadn’t have been going so fast, everyone would have survived.
Speed is considered the main factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
