Condemned inmate forgoes last meal, requests for meals to be given to homeless instead

Death Row inmate Don Johnson has decided to forgo his last meal, according to the Tennessee Department of Corrections.

TDOC says Johnson turned down the last meal selection and will be given the same menu as the rest of the prisoners at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution.

Johnson’s legal team says he was inspired by his friend Philip Workman, who was also a Seventh-day Adventist.

Workman, who was executed on May 9, 2007, requested a vegetarian pizza be delivered to a homeless person. The state denied that request, but the following day PETA delivered 20 large veggie pizzas to the Nashville Rescue Mission.

“Mr. Johnson realizes that his $20 allotment will not feed many homeless people. His request is that those who have supported him provide a meal to a homeless person,” said Kelley Henry.

Johnson is scheduled to be executed Thursday.
