Family of murder victim sues Waffle House suspect, father for $100M

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A new lawsuit has been filed against the man accused of opening fire inside the Antioch Waffle House and his father.

Four people were killed that night, including Akilah DaSilva, 23. Now his mother is suing Travis Reinking and his father, Jeffrey.

The suit claims Travis Reinking’s father contributed to the Waffle House shooting by returning guns to his unstable son after police in Illinois revoked his firearm owner’s identification card on orders from the FBI.

The DaSilva family is asking for at least $100 million from Travis and Jeffrey Reinking.

Akilah DaSilva is described as a computer engineering student at MTSU, who loved photography, writing poetry and directing music videos.

He was gunned down during the early morning hours of April 22, inside the Waffle House on Murfreesboro Road in Antioch.

Travis Reinking was captured on April 23 after a two day manhunt.

Public records document several Reinking arrests, including an incident at the White House, which led to an order that Reinking give up his weapons, including a Bushmaster XM-15, the same type of rifle used at the Waffle House.

he Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office gave the weapons to Jeffrey Reinking, on condition that he would not return the firearms to his son. The suit alleges the father not only gave the guns back to his son but also took actions to “undo efforts of law enforcement to disarm his mentally deranged and dangerous son because doing so would promote his personal convenience.”

The mother of Akilah DeSilva said in a statement Wednesday:

“The purpose of this lawsuit is to honor my son’s beloved memory, hold those responsible for his death fully accountable, and help ensure that nobody else’s family ever has to experience the sorrow and horror that we have.”

This is the second lawsuit naming Jeffrey Reining. The first suit against Reinking’s father was filed in May by the family of Joe Perez, who also died in the Waffle House shooting rampage.
