Hamblen Co man in custody after shooting at sheriff’s deputies

A Hamblen County man is behind bars after he shot at sheriff’s deputies who were investigating a burglary. 

On Thursday, May 3 Derrick Logan Jefferson made a forcible entry into an Oak Lane residence in Hamblen County. The resident of the home hid upstairs. Jefferson said he had a gun before the resident fired one shot into a wall and retreated from the home and calling 911. 

When officers arrived they made contact with the suspect inside an upstairs bedroom closet, the suspect fired a single round at the officers. The suspect was arrested after the firearm malfunctioned attempting a second shot. The suspect told officers that he intended to kill them. 

He was charged with attempted first degree murder, aggravated assault and aggravated burglary. 

Derrick Logan Jefferson was transported to Hamblen County Jail. No bond has been set at this time. Lt. Hefner and Sgt. Ringley handled the situation in a manner that prevented injury or further complications.
