ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (WJHL) – Johnson City Police Department Chief Mark Sirois confirmed the JCPD Bomb Squad responded to an area behind Big John’s Closeouts in Elizabethton Thursday. Elizabethton is west of Johnson City.

Sirois said the bomb squad was requested by Elizabethton Police Department to assist with a possible device at an area near North Watauga Avenue and Railroad Street near the Tweetsie Trail.

According to an EPD news release, officers responded to the area around 11:15 a.m. and located the object on the ground near the crossing of the Tweetsie Trail.

Because of its physical appearance, officers then requested JCPD’s bomb squad and further inspection of the device revealed it was a portion of a metal pipe with components and characteristics consistent with being an improvised explosive device.

According to the release, the device was rendered safe by the bomb squad and evidence collected from the scene indicated that the object was devised as an explosive.
