Tennessee Highway Patrol Col. Tracy Trott announced his retirement Wednesday evening after 40 years of service.

Lt. Col. Dereck Stewart will assume the role of colonel on June 1. Trott is set to retire the day before.

Trott has served with THP for 40 years, the last eight as colonel. During that time. THP has grown to employ more than 900 troopers and has received several national awards.

Stewart has been in law enforcement for the last 30 years. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 2011 and has been responsible for the daily operations of the agency.

“I have been blessed to work with great people and have a tremendous support staff. To say I have been lucky would be an understatement. For a long time, I have expressed my recommendation to the Commissioner and Governor about my successor. I am very pleased that they have accepted my recommendation,” said Trott in a statement.
