The Tennessee Valley Authority released on their Twitter Wednesday that Fontana Lake is currently four feet above normal summer pool level. This is due to heavy rainfall in the area.
Fontana Lake is currently four feet above normal summer pool level because of heavy rainfall in the area. We are releasing water through the spillway tunnel to bring the reservoir back down to normal summer pool. pic.twitter.com/J2Sr304Gez— TN Valley Authority (@TVAnews) May 30, 2018
In an effort to return the reservoir back to normal summer pool level, the TVA is releasing water through the spillway tunnel.
Fontana Lake is not the only spot releasing large amounts of water. All 9 dams on the Tennessee River are releasing water through their generating units and 7 of those dams are spilling to move water down the river. This release is also due to heavy rainfall. Similar gushes are also being seen on Boone Lake and Douglas Lake.
The TVA is warning people to be aware of increased river flows below the dams and not to approach any turbulent water.
