MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (WATE) – A man forced his way into an apartment, shot two people and then killed himself early Saturday, the Morristown Police Department said.

Officers responded to the scene of a shooting just after 12 a.m. on Saturday at an apartment complex at 1155 Mcfarland Street, where 3 people had suffered gunshot wounds.

According to a release from the Morristown Police Department, 30-year-old Brandon Michael McMurtury of Morristown forced his way into the apartment and shot two victims with a .32 caliber handgun before turning the gun on himself.

30-year-old Angel Robert Garcia of Morristown died from his wounds and 29-year-old Wanda Batista Maldonado was taken to UT Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

All three individuals knew each other and Maldonado reported to investigators that she had previously had issues with McMurtury.

“Between the police cars, the rescue squads, it was three rescue squads, and altogether with the fire truck and everything, it was 14 cars when I counted,” said Raymon Phipps, describing the scene overnight. He and his wife Danyelle live just beside the complex.

“It just bothers me. I know there’s children that live there, and I just think it’s pitiful. It’s just scary is all I can really say,” Danyelle said.

Those living nearby called the situation sad and scary.

“All I can do is just pray for them and hope everything comes out alright,” Raymond said.

This is still an ongoing investigation, we will release any additional information as soon as it comes into our newsroom.
