KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Knoxville Police Department has identified the motorcyclist who was killed in a crash on Asheville Highway on Thursday morning.

KPD shared in a Friday morning update that the victim of the fatal crash has been identified as Travis Wilkerson, 32 of Knoxville. KPD also said the crash remains under active investigation by its crash reconstruction personnel. 

Around 7:40 a.m. on Thursday, KPD officers responded to the intersection of Asheville Highway and Ruggles Ferry Pike. The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene by AMR personnel.  

“This crash, which involved a motorcycle, sadly proved to be fatal,” KPD said in its update on Twitter. “Crash reconstruction personnel are on scene to lead the fatal crash investigation.”

A release from KPD said that based on the preliminary investigation, the motorcycle is believed to have been going west on Asheville Highway when a Honda SUV attempted to turn left onto Ruggles Ferry. The motorcycle then hit the side of the Honda according to KPD.

KPD initially told drivers to seek alternate routes after responding to the crash on Asheville Highway at Ruggles Ferry Pike. This is located in northeast Knox County.
