Originally bred for retrieving water game in Canada, the Labrador Retriever dog breed has had Americans under its slobbery spell for almost three decades.

The sporty, loyal, loveable dog has once again topped the American Kennel Club’s list of most popular dog breeds for the 28th year in a row, based on registration statistics for those years.

German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers and French Bulldogs followed close behind Labs on the list.

A spokesperson for the AKC says the breed shows “no sign of giving up the top spot anytime soon.”
