Woman killed in McMinn County house fire

ATHENS (WTVC) – A house fire has claimed the life of a McMinn County woman.

The fire broke out Wednesday morning at 5 a.m. at a home near County Road 609.

“When we arrived, the back corner of the house was on fire,” Chief Billy Roach with the Englewood Fire Department told WTVC.

The homeowner noticed fire coming from the roof. He and three children, all under the age of 10, managed to get out of the house, and the homeowner called 911.

But a woman was still inside.

Fire crews desperately searched for the woman, but the flames were too intense.

They eventually found her body in the back portion of the house after taking about 10 minutes to get the flames under control.

“We’re wore out,” said Roach about his teams of firefighters, “they don’t like to lose anybody.”

As the day dawned, almost a dozen grieving family members showed up at the scene, many in tears.

A Tennessee State Fire Investigator is on the scene trying to find out how the fire happened.
