Zaevion Dobson’s mother reflects on year since shooting death

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Saturday marks one year since Zaevion Dobson was shot and killed. Dobson was gunned down while protecting two girls from being shot last December. Two men have been charged with murder and attempted murder.

His mother Zenobia Dobson visited his grave site the night before the anniversary. She said some days are easier than others. On Friday, she said she felt joy because Saturday is going to be a day of celebration of her son’s life.

“There is not a day… there is not a day gone by that I don’t think of him.”

At her son’s headstone, she has placed several lights. She checks them frequently to make sure they are always working.

“I need a bright light so I can know which one is mine,” said Zenobia Dobson.

It is a hard time for any mother, especially around the holidays. Many of the decorations around her home are for Zaevion. She said the last thing he placed on the tree before he died was a candy cane. That is one of the main decorations on her Christmas tree. Zenobia Dobson has kept almost every award and favorite photos of her son.

“There is just a bond that we have. I wont let go,” said Zenobia Dobson.

She continues to grieve over the loss of her son but she said Saturday is not the time to be sad. She is going to celebrate his life.

“I am going to celebrate his legacy. I am going to celebrate the love and the joy that my son had,” said Zenobia Dobson.

She said it is a legacy that will continue to live on because her son stood up for something he knew was right.

“He protected his friends. He made the ultimate sacrifice.,” said Zenobia Dobson.

She said it is time for her city to stand up and fight for our children. She is not going to let his memory fade and she is grateful for the outpouring of support from the community. She plans to place a light in the spot where Zaevion Dobson was killed. On Saturday, family and friends will gather at their community church to celebrate her son’s life

Christopher Bassett and Richard Williams were charged with first degree murder. The trial date for both men has been set for July 14, 2017.
