Greeneville repeats as 4A State Champs

In a game that began as a shootout it ended much like it did a year ago, with the Green Devils dominating on their way to a second consecutive unbeaten season and claiming back-to-back 4A State Championship Titles with a 56-21 win over Haywood.

Cade Ballard, who was recently named the 4A Tennessee Titans Mr. Football for a second consecutive year, and the Greeneville passing offense were limited due to weather conditions posting just 95 yards.

The devils high-powered offense was forced to rely on their ground game where they literally ran away with the game posting 408 rushing yards to the Tomcats 192. Ballard led the charge with 162 yards on 19 attempts and four touchdowns, a performance that earned him the game MVP. Jaevon Gillespie had 15 carries for 173 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and Ty Youngblood finished with 16 carries for 69 yards and two touchdowns.

After the Green Devils defense allowed 21 points in the first quarter, the most the defense has allowed in any game all season, they went on to shutout the Tomcats in the second, third and fourth quarters.

The Greeneville seniors end their time in Green and White with an overall record of 52-3 and two state titles. Ballard ends his senior season with 3,050 yards. He had more touchdown passes (40) than incompletions (38) and just one interception.
