Sports

The Knoxville Ice Bears have been challenged.

In a new playoff format, the 3-seed Pensacola Ice Flyers have chosen 5-seed Knoxville to meet in the first round (challenge round) of the SPHL President’s Cup Playoffs.

The top three teams from the regular season were given the opportunity to select their first round opponent from the teams seeded 5-8. No. 1 Peoria and 2-seed Macon passed on Knoxville to set up another meeting with the Ice Flyers.

Pensacola holds a 3-1-0 record against Knoxville this season, with the Ice Bears taking their only win in a 9-round shootout on Saturday. The Ice Flyers finished the regular season 33-16-7 (73 points), seven points ahead of Knoxville’s 30-20-6 season.

The Ice Bears will travel to Pensacola, Florida on April 12th to open the series before returning to Knoxville on Saturday for their only home game of the series. Due to scheduling conflicts, the third game of the series, should it be needed, will be played in Birmingham, Alabama. Puck drop for Saturday’s game will be 7:35 pm.
