No. 23 Tennessee picked up its second SEC series win in a row after holding off No. 15 Ole Miss 7-5 on Friday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
While it was a win, it might have ended with a loss for Tony Vitello’s pitching staff.
Tennessee starter Garrett Crochet (4-3) was hit in the head with a line drive in the third inning, forcing him to head to the locker room early. Vitello confirmed after the game that the best left-hander in his rotation was sent to the hospital and will likely need surgery to realign his jawbone.
The series win also gave Tennessee 14 conference wins this season, which was believed to be the magic number for the Vols to earn an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament.
Tennessee will go for the sweep over the Rebels Saturday at Noon before the SEC Tournament begins on Tuesday in Hoover, Alabama.
