Lady Vols advance to third straight Super Regional

Knoxville, TN. (WATE) – It took 11 innings, but Tennessee finally had their break through. Shutout in game one of the eventual double-header, Tennessee was still scoreless on the afternoon in the fifth inning of game two when Ashley Morgan stepped to the plate and delivered a slicing two-run double into center field to give the Lady Vols the only runs they’d need to advance to another Super Regional.

Ashley Rogers and North Carolina’s Brittany Pickett battled pitch for pitch in the first game of the day, the only difference being Kristina Burkhardt’s sixth inning solo shot that helped the Tar Heels edge Tennessee in the first game, setting up a winner-take-all game two shortly afterward.

Again it was Pickett, who held Tennessee to two hits in the first tilt, taking the circle for UNC. Tennessee got to her just enough to matter in the 2-0 win.

Caylan Arnold tossed six shutout innings, while Matty Moss pitched a perfect frame in the 7th for the save.

This marks their third trip to the round of 16 in as many years, and also the third time they’ll face an SEC opponent. Two years ago it was Texas A&M, last year it was Georgia, this time it will be Florida in Gainesville.

Tennessee hasn’t advanced past the Super Regional to the College World Series since 2015.

The Lady Vols will head to Gainesville for the best-of-three series that will start either Thursday or Friday night. Tennessee took two of three from Florida on SEC opening weekend in March.
