WILLIAMSPORT, LYCOMING COUNTY(WBRE/WYOU-TV) – It’s time to swing into baseball season.

And for Little League players worldwide..it’s a perfect time to brush up on their skill sets.

“The result of a baseball game with mediocre players is a mediocre game. The result of a baseball game with mediocre umpires is chaos,” said Director of Umpire Development with Little League International, Tom Rawlings.

Which is why “Umpire School” is now in session.

The week long training is open to anyone who is currently umpiring Little League or thinking about starting.

“We strive to take Little League umpires and give them the skill set they need to rise above an aerage umpire and give the kids, the boys and the girls a much better experience,” said Rawlings.

Umpire after umpire made their way down to the field for some important lessons.

In a classroom setting they learn the rules and how to deal with coaches and managers on the field.

But here on the plate is where it’s all put to the test..

“What we’re working on behind us right now is getting into the proper positioning for calling a pitch and then getting into a slot,” said Umpire Instructor, Zachary Gump.

They’ve come from Virginia, Maryland, Tennesee and Idaho..and around the world.

“It’s pretty exciting to come out here. We’re looking to better ourselves so that we can not only be better officials in our country but also to help our youth,” said Umpire, Trevor Selanders.

Trevor Selanders traveled from Canada to be here for the training.

This is his first time every stepping foot in Pennsylvania.

“I’m really excited about being here it’s awesome,” said Selanders.

There’s one thing these umps and the players have in common – to one day appear in the Little League World Series.

“I think it’s every umpires dream to one day get on the biggest stage and be that guy who gets to make that call,” said Selanders.

Others say the best part is the comradarei.

OTHERS SAY THE BEST PART IS THE COMRADAREI….

“Umpiring we have a brotherhood so that bond is very strong. When the students first arrive they’re a little shy they really don’t talk. By the end of the week they’re laughing carrying on and they’re all friends,” said Gump.

Eyewitness News is once again proud to broadcast and stream “The Grand Slam Parade” in Williamsport in mid-August..which kicks off this year’s World Series.
